Even with 3D-printed buildings and other technologies, construction is still a very analog process. But there’s room for some digital innovations among the wood, glass, and concrete and HP’s newest robot demonstrates that.

The company just announced SitePrint, a small, autonomous robot that rolls around a room and prints the layout directly onto the floor, saving construction crews the time and energy needed to do the job manually. It’s a rugged little robot that’s aware enough to avoid objects while drawing plans from the cloud-based software smoothly and accurately onto multiple surfaces.

HP said that layout experts can be tough to find and that even the best can sometimes make errors. The SitePrint can present a more readily available and time-saving option for construction projects.

HP partnered with Leica Geosystems to create a link between the SitePrint and a Robotic Total Station to ensure the robot maintains precision while drawing out plans. And the company has come up with multiple inks suitable for printing on varied surfaces, addressing environmental conditions, and meeting durability standards. The robot has been tested in 80 pilot projects for applications including residential, parking, airports, and hospitals.

SitePrint will be available later this year as part of an early access program for North American customers before HP makes it more widely and commercially available in 2023.
