Trimble DA2 and R Series GNSS Systems to the Rescue of Water Utility Project in TN

Surveying for water pipelines can get quite painstaking, but with state-of-the-art instruments the work gets done efficiently, seamlessly and in less time, which has long been one of the hallmarks of Trimble instruments.

The Water Supply and Drainage Board of Tamil Nadu had a similar requirement and couple of Trimble products swiftly came to its aid. The board needed reliable surveying and levelling to provide Medium Velocity Water Spray System (MVWSS) across the state. The project also included detailed topography survey, preparing tree map, and submitting the alignment plan, with important details such as topographical features, permanent land marks, bench marks etc.

What were the instruments that enabled the completion of this project? Trimble DA2 and Trimble R series GNSS receivers.

The usage of Trimble DA2 as rover and Trimble R series for Base Station significantly fast forwarded the project, with a minimal team size. The department could perform a detailed survey of around 2500 Kilometers in a short span of time.

After fixing the Base Station/control point, the data was collected by Trimble DA2 device using GSM RTK method. The Team (two members only) used “Continuous topographic survey” Option to run the RTK along the road and thereby collected the complete alignment for the same.

The pole with the GSM RTK DA2 was mounted on a Motor vehicle, which was operated by an individual and the mounted pole with the instrument was held by another. The team drove the vehicle along the center of the road, which was programmed to take points at every 10 meters interval, collecting all the data along the road.

Then the team went back to the surveyed stretch to collect other data like the existing pillars, bends, culverts, river crossing etc. using the standard RTK method. The data was then processed and aligned with the continuously obtained data.

The team was able to collect data in a short span of time with minimal effort. On an average, they collected data of 30 km per day. This project was earlier carried out through DGPS instruments and methodologies which delayed it to a great extent, which is why the department was looking for an immediate solution to expedite it.

Trimble DA2 and Trimble R series GNSS instruments gave excellent results with a very little effort and manpower. As they are very light weight, it became convenient for the surveyors to carry them across harsh terrains. User friendly interface of the Trimble Android application made the process even smoother.

Trimble DA2 GNSS receiver is the next generation receiver for the Trimble Catalyst GNSS positioning service, which is lightweight (only 330grams), convenient to carry anywhere and provides precise positioning (from centimeter to sub-meter accuracy).

The best part of the R series receiver is that it can get easily integrated with Trimble S-Series Total Stations also. When combined with a Trimble controller, running Trimble Access field software and Trimble Business Centre office software, it creates a complete solution for checking, processing and adjusting your data.
